I just changed from McAfee to AVG and I suspect that may be the problem. I can open BitComet and the BitComet site but when I try TorrentSpy or any of the other sites in BitComet It just stays on “opening page” or “contacting site, waiting for reply” Can anyone help me?

AVG shouldnt be causing this, it is just a basic antivirus
are you sure you completely removed Mcafee
do a search on your computer for “mcafee” and delete anything it finds
then download and install crap cleaner
in crap cleaner use the scan for issues button and clean up anything it finds
or
here are various instructions to manually remove mcafee
Do you have Peerguardian???
-if so then you should “Allow HTTP”
Do you have any firewall software besides the windows firewall???
