Hi Aminewolf, please check your IE 8 settings, or restore the default settings.

Thanks for replying Lucy26 …

I tried that before but it didnt work …I also tried to reinstall C++ it didnt work either…

the issue is still open for any suggestions …

thnx .

Are you using any IP filtering programs like Peer Guardian, PeerBlock, Protowall, or anything similar?

You should understand that BitComet’s built-in browser is a modified version of IE5. What you’re seeing in that window is an email message from IE8, rather than the CometID web site. This is something pretty clearly external to BitComet. Some system setting is bringing up this email rather than the proper site.

Since IE is so closely integrated with the operating system, all settings affect all installed versions of IE. This has long been one of its chief disadvantages.

One thing you can try is to dump IE’s cache, shut it down, then clean out the “Temporary Internet Files” folder in your user directory. Maybe that will get rid of the email.

Another thing to try is a clean uninstall – complete removal including the folder in %appdata%, then reboot – and reinstall of BitComet.

I second Kluelos opinion, and add that before you try reinstalling bitcomet, shutdown and restart your system (after clearing cache and deleting temp files)

No Im not using any of those IP softwares…

I did what you suggested Kluelos But nothing seems to solve this problem … i dumped IE cache using ccleaner and unstalled Bitcomet using RivoUninstaller 2.5 and get rid of all leftovers regkeys and files and so … it aint working …

And I noticed the same problem with SpeedBit video accelerator when window pops up while accelerating youtube…

I think its a C++ issue since when I update W7 it install c++2005 and c++2008 and my Ati CCC install c++ 2010 …could that be the problem cause before updating windows bitcomet runs fine …

Any other suggestions …

I have a suggestion.

Why doesn’t the team implement an extremely lite version of their own browser CometBird for the few web displaying jobs BitComet needs (such as the CometID pannel and the Start tab), instead of relying on the IE engine and get everybody rid, once and for all, of the wretched IE?

On a personal note, I’ve repeatedly given lots of chances to IE along the years (since v.6 up to the latest v.8) and it never failed to disappoint me. When I saw the late v.8 crashing constantly (even on Win 7) and stuttering in bringing me web pages for which Mozilla or Opera had no problems, I’ve irrevocably quit using it.

I, now, only rarely happen to use it, if I’m on a computer which doesn’t have any other browser installed and I don’t have time to install a different browser (yeah, the memories that stay with me, about IE, are THAT bad).

It sure could be, but you understand you’re well past the point where we stop, shrug, and wish you well as you head into the sunset. This is not, at heart, an issue that BitComet can do much about.

However, you don’t need the built-in browser at all. Many of us never use it, and I don’t use that entire pane. I have “Favorites” unchecked in the view menu. The latest versions of BitComet will even bring the various task menus (seeding only, leeching only, all) into the main list; the suggested torrent sites have not been maintained in a long time; and I don’t really bother about my CometID rank, so I don’t need anything in this pane. I think the application is very uncluttered and clean without it.

That’s a band-aid, admittedly, but it’s the one I use.

Unless you have occasion to do a complete new install of Windows, so you can check and monitor this at each step to find out where it goes wrong, I don’t think you’re going to have much success tracking it down.

Hi aminewolf, the BitComet wiki has been updated, please read What to do when garbled text appears in the passport pane.

Thank you for your suggestion, Wiz, however if we replace IE with CometBird in the CometID pane, the BitComet installation package will be several MB larger than its current size. Therefore we have added the solution to this problem in the BitComet wiki, users will be able to help themselves in the future (hopefully).

Well , Kluelos i dont use that pane much either but , i bothers me when I cant find a solution for someth’ … plus i had it since v1.24 but Now it’s working , I followed the link of Lucy26 and it fixed it ( +++rep )

thnx for all your replies guys … peace…

Lucy, would it be difficult to make bitcomet selectable between using an already installed cometbird or firefox instead of IE?

Personally I like the idea of keeping things simple, so I don’t know if that would be a good idea, but if it can be done relatively easily without a lot of complication, then it might be a good idea.

ps. I also agree if we force users to install cometbird in order to use bitcomet, then we are going to get a lot of complaints. As it is, our product is several megabytes in size where competing clients, like utorrent are less then 1/4 of a MB, so we definitely don’t want to make a change that doubles or triples the size. also, cometbird can tend to use a lot of ram memory, so if we add that to the processes that a computer needs to use to run bitcomet, then its going to adversely effect many users.

Actually, what I meant was replacing the very rudimentary IE engine which BitComet uses internally with a similarly rudimentary Firefox engine (since the code is freely available out there and the team already works since long with it, in building CometBird).

I was in no way suggesting to actually implement CometBird into the installer but to use the barely necessary Firefox code to build an extremely lite replacement version of the web engine BitComet uses at present, for displaying the ComedID pane and the Start tab, in order for BitComet to rely on Mozilla code instead of IE for web display.

While I’m really glad this worked for you, animewolf, I’m dismayed to learn that we’re now vulnerable to an Outlook bug too. Some days …

Wiz, I’m not sure about this, but I think bitcomet only uses the parts of IE that are already installed on the users computer. I don’t think it actually installs it, but I could be wrong.

For example, there is basic web browsing support built into windows even if you have a version without Internet Explorer. You can see this by typing a complete url into the address bar on any folder. It’s also used in the “help” topics. You can even access a webpage from windows calculator, although I haven’t tried that since I stopped using winXP.
