Hello, Guys! Long time no see! I’ve recently figured out why I counldn’t access the forums from home… the site isn’t compatible with my ancient WIN XP anymore…
I've managed to get in, when I've been at the Academy and at the Public Library (WIN 10/ 11, but it's a no-go when at home. It's really too bad, because I enjoy coming in and banning almost*** every single new member ***(it kinda reminds me of the previous, older site we had just abandoned, before we came here...) nothing but spam everywhere (mostly from India, from what I've seen, today)). It releases pent-up daily tensions ☠️, LOL.
Anyway, I'll still attempt to try to pop in whenever I can, as I can't afford a new PC/laptop ATM (the prices are simply ridiculous).
Take care!! 😘 😘
Cassie, it’s very unlikely that the problem with posting is caused by the OS - it#s more likely a setting in either the network settings or the browser settings.
What you could try is to set up a 'windows to go' on a USB drive, using Windows 7 (this won't install on the hard dribve, but is a self-contained oS on a USB thumb drive. If 7 works, then consider installing it (after you have backed everything up> If not, do the backup anyway and rhen re-format the main drive and re-install XP.
To make w Windows to Go' USB. you will need Aomei Partition Manager (read [this website ](https://www.diskpart.com/win2go/windows-7-windows-to-go-1004.html)for 'how to')
If yopu have to re-install XP, you can set up a bootable US B drive using [Rufus](https://rufus.ie/en/). If you have lost the key for installation, run [Magic Jelly Bean](https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/) before you do anything else and get a copy of the key
While I thank you for the tutorial and instructions that you’ve taken the time to tell me about, Rhubarb, You forget that I’m a complete “dud” when it comes time to change settings, instal new apps,…anything tech-oriented, basically (TUUS can vouche for this).
Right now I'm writing, whilst the teacher isn't looking (at the academy)... I will, however copy and paste your post into my pendrive and dump it into my PC at home later on, tonight. Thank you for all of your directions. Take care and stay warm.😘 😘
Well, it finally happened… an old (Swiss) ex-client of mine called me and hired me for a weekend of consecutive interpretation, here in Gran Canaria. Not a bad amount of income for a three-day-stint (I even got to stay at the five-star hotel - Tabaiba Princess-, where my daughter works!!). Anyway, I decided to spend part of the earnings on two second-hand HP laptops (one for each of us, because hers had died, too). 860 Euros later, I can finally come back here and have my way with all those nasty spammers. Now I’m trying to reinstall most of my old netbook’s programs (a very slow and tedious task). Both HP lappies have WIN 11 64-bit, so, at least I can get in here although I’m studying at another academy, in order to get the equivalent of a Master´s degree in Teaching English (since my Bachelor´s Degree was never officially recognised (‘homologado’, in Spanish)… a stupid EU, requirement and just another way to collect money from people, as far as I’m concerned)… and all this at my advanced age!! I´m seriously flipping, LOL!! Do either of you know where I can get a copy (pirated or not, I don´t care…) of MS Office -mostly Word, Excel and PPT- (I highly dislike Open Office and so does my daughter, and she´s also studying online for work… she wants to have her Certificate of Professionalism for Barman/Bartender/whatever-it’s called, nowadays).? and… she’s going crazy (and driving me crazy, along with her) as she’s getting married on April 13th. I know. I sound foolish and brain-scattered, but my baby girl is all “growed up” (she’s 26)!! How quickly they grow up (yeah, I know, we’ve all heard it said countless times before, but it’s true… Time just flies by sooo quickly…)
Anyway, I just thought I'd share the news with you since I've been MIA lately...and I'm sorry for that. But now I'm back... Wooahaha!!😹😹
Or, don't bother with MS Office and download Libreoffice from [https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/libreoffice/](https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/libreoffice/) here. It's a huge improvement over Open Office
The beauty of LO is that it does everything MS Office does but it's FREE (and it can read and write MS Office, Lotus, etc files)
Windows 11? I tried it and found it clunky (and didn't like it). The menu system is a backward step so I reverted to 10 (until they get an improved version of the next doze incarnation)
Ha,ha, that’s exactly what I ended up dowloading (LibreOffice), but have to ocasionally save my work as MSOffice docx or pdf (the academy wants all of our work uploaded to a Moodle platform in this format, don’t know why, nor do I care). Yeah, I’m not exactly thrilled with WIN11 Home edition, but, hey, the lappie was second -hand and at a reduced price, and now, I have a learning curve to climb as most of my previous experience was with MS Office 2003-2007, and the rest of my programs… plus my old netbook (Win XP Pro SP3) was 32-bit and this one is 64-bit, thus most of my previously-installed programs aren’t compatible with the “new boy”- One thing that still bugs me is that everytime that I turn the darn thing on, a pop-up continuously appears asking if I want to have the page translated into/from Spanish in/to English… Just simply annoying, LOL.
As of yesterday, I finally passed and finished my academy classes and am now a Certified "Teacher of Teachers" that teach English in public and private schools and the State Employment Services (Servicios de Enseñanza Para el Empleo (SEPE)... akin to Canada´s Manpower Dept., managed and approved by the MInistry of Education... all without having to do a Master's Degree in Education). No small feat, in the Spanish world of burocracy...LOL. After the next two weeks, I'll just have to work (without getting paid, of course) at another academy as part of our "Practices", to make sure that we all know how to create Teachers' Guides and burocratic Documentation to make up and remit to the SEPE and MIn. of Ed.), get my Certificate of Professionalism with said title, and then I'll be forever "free" once more. Yay!! Not bad for someone who'll turn 64 (*gasp*) in July, huh?
How are you guys doing? How's your health, TUUS? Whereabouts are you staying, now? What about you, Rhubarb? How's the weather where you are? Around here, the weather's crazy, one minute its at 28ºC and four hours later it's 16ºC and extremely windy... absoultely no rainfall this winter (at least, in this island), and the reservoirs are at an all-time low. It's actually much worse on the mainland... floods ***and*** drought, in several provinces.
Thje weather here? As my late mother said “If yoiu can see the hills, it’s going to rain. If you can’t see them, it’s already raining” (add in cold as well) - US visitors moan about that when the rest of us are sweating if the temperature goes over 22 C (we’re just not used to it)
PDF conversion - google for 'free pdf conversion' and you should get a LOT of hits (there are loads of apps that will do that). (or you could do as I did - download a .torrent and install that). I have a hacked copy of Acrobat X (way ouit of date, I know but it does what I want - I don't need all the bells and whistles)
I haven't paid for an OS in years - I was at the launch of W 7 and we all got a free, FULL version of 7 Ultimate in both 32 and 64 bit versions, complete with a registration key and 10 and 11 Pro were free once that was installed. I did try W 8 and got rid of it right away - I just didn't like it. Mark you, I'm not sure about W 11 - I prefer 10 with a proper selectable menu but that's MS - they keep alternating between a 'good' windows and a terrible one - think Windows 3/Windows 3.1, W 95A/W95B, W98/W98SE, Millennium/XP, W8/W10 amd you see the pattern (Windows 2000 was a stopgap based on their server OS)
You might be able to install W 10 if you have a registered copy of 11 - I know you can download and install 11 if you have 10 - no key required as it uses your hardware setup to be recognised as 'legitimate'. You can try installing on an external drive (use [Rufus](https://rufus.ie/en/) to make a bootable thumb drive once you [download the ISO from MS](https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10), or you can actually build a bootable thumb drive directly)
I'm retired (I passed 65 many years ago). If you want any info on me, you can check the ham radio website at [https://www.qrz.com](https://www.qrz.com) and search for 'gi7omy' (my callsign).
Spanish isn't one of my languages - it was brought in as a choice for selected students in third year the year after I chose German (over Greek) on the grounds that I was more liklely to meet and speak with a living German than an ancient Greek. ( was already learning Latin and French at that stage). Irish I picked up a lot later on
