Hi I am running on windows xp prof, my isp is bt broadband with a max of 8mb which varies from

5991.2 Kbps

734.2 K bytes/sec

to

3702.4 Kbps

453.7 K bytes/sec (ZDNET) and my isp speed tester average is 3000 kilo bits per second (Kbps)

I am reasonably happy with as the average around this area is 5.5mbs but the problem is when i come to download anything my download rate is very poor ranging from 20kbps to 100kbps when i should be running atleast trebble that.

my adaptor is dell wireless 1450 dual-band (802.11 a/b/g) usb2.0 adaptor, when setting up port forwarding i lookin at what my router was actually recieving and it was getting all 8mbs which i was happy to see.

i just reformatted this computer that i am running now and has spyware/spybots, the only firewall i have is the one that is on my router which is netgear DG834G (which i have port forwarded for the programs that i am d/l with)

MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.

ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE REALLY HELPFUL AS I AM GOING OUT OF MY BRAINS :angry: TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE IS GOING ON!!! TY also suggestions on how to get my test results a lil bit more stable and consistant would be a great help to! (hope i haven’t missed nething out)

Did you set that MTU value in your PC or your router??? -its best to set it in your router as well as your PC

Now are all your downloads slow or just Bittorrent downloads???

maybe BT is back to throttling like they were doing in the past

MTU was set on pc i think was done with a prog called TCP optimizer that i got from the net.

when doin speed test it says i have a decnt down/up speed as shown about but they vary on american site to uk, bittorrent downloads now are really really slow (24kbps slow) thats on films and on games, could it be my isp?

Look around in your router and see if you can adjust the MTU there as well.

(It usually is near where you set up the WAN options)

Also you should adjust your RWIN using that TCP optimizer program so that its a multiple of the MSS

It could possibly be your ISP, they did throttle p2p in the past

just on using the open office torrent it started off slowish 40kbs then to 100 kbs, then 200 kbs, 250 kbs and when it finished its summary was 185 KB/s within 00:08:44 which isn’t to bad but again should be better

the mtu is 1458 on the router.

quick question, are you from the uk? and could have anything to so with distance from the exchange point or static in the line, i have been told can slow you down

is there anything i can do to get a constant download speed/connection or is that at the end of the isp’s?

No im from the US

both of those things you mentioned do have an affect on speed

Distance → with ADSL the farther you are from the Central Office or Remote Terminal the slower your sync rate will be, generally an ISP wont let you have the 8mbps connection unless your line can handle it but this may not always be the case. 1800 meters is the absolute maximum distance for 8mbps sync but you will never actually see 8mbps at that distance

Line Noise → will mess with your signal if the dB is weak. Old Microwaves and ungrounded dimmer switches are a few things that can cause line noise.

Quick question, what kind of speeds do you get when downloading off the web???

hey just me again, my speeds vary alot! from a bt download test, where you can d/l three files labelled small medium and large, they large file was 15mb and on that test the top speed i saw was 650 kbps which is about what i am after. But d/l from www.downloads.com (freeware) i get from 7.5kbps to 75 kbps and site downloads have vaired speeds think roughly my average is about 200kbps which is only 1.6meg which is not what im paying/expecting.

This is gonna sound dumb but here it goes… what sort of question should i be asking the BT engineer because usually they try to pass the buck onto either the line/technical jargon or they try to say that the line is new (1month old now) and say that the line is just stablising itself which to be fair well past that stage

my mate lives closer to the exchange point then me and she can d/l a film in about 4 hours, which is what im after!!! before i upgraded to max 8mb i was reading up about my area line quality and d/l speeds and bt said the the average was 5.5, i thought GR8!!! how mislead was i? so i asked about this 5.5mb d/l i they tried to fob me off with its is the best and worst added together and divided by the number of connection but if this was the case even the lostest can really be that bad as 5.5 aver is high considering that the most you can get is 8!!! you think i may have been conned???

On bitcomet itself most the downloads are going slower then the uploads, why is this???

could it be the fact that the ppl i am d/lin off have slow connections? what are you running on? what sort d/l speeds do you get? could it be down to my wireless network as the router and line is downstairs and the laptop and 1 of the computer is upstairs? or could it be because that im using a usb adaptor instead of a cards…so many things it could be!!!
