As I said some time ago, Ive got an old computer at work and it runs really slow occasionally. I have to open pdf files thru the browser and Adobe Reader 9.3 is as heavy as steel, so last week I pmed KNTRO and he recommend me to uninstall Adobe Reader and install Foxit Reader, which is lighter and safer, according to his words - I did it and I can tell that is so =) Foxit Reader is really faster and lighter than Adobe Reader when opening pdf files.
However I can open pdf files with Firefox, but cant with Cometbird. Some people said here that Cometbird is Firefox basically, so I thought it should be possible to open pdf files with Cometbird using Foxit Reader. Any tip about it?
Yes, you’re able to open PDF files in CometBird, using Foxit Reader. What happens is that the Foxit Reader Plugin for Mozilla does not recognize CometBird as a Mozilla technology based program <_<. Therefore, it won’t load the plugin for CometBird by default, which is such an unfair thing, IMHO. You won’t believe me, but I sent this very concern to Foxit Corporation some weeks ago and they said they might have in mind CometBird compatibility for future releases of Foxit Reader. Hope they still do, because, as you said, Foxit Reader is too much lighter (and safer) than Adobe Reader. It’s simpler, not so sophisticated as Adobe’s PDF reader, but if you only need to open PDF files with little system resources’ usage and safely, Foxit Reader is the one for you. B)
How to make Foxit Reader Plugin for Mozilla be loaded in CometBird
Well, it’s really easy. I think you use Windows XP, right? If so:
■ 1. Go to C:\Program Files\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader\plugin and look for a file named npFoxitReaderPlugin.dll. Copy it.
■ 2. Be sure you are not running CometBird at the time and go to C:\Program Files\CometBird\plugins. Paste the copied file there. Then just run CometBird.
■ 3. Once CometBird is running, from the menu bar, go to Tools > Add-ons and select the Plugins tab. It should appear there Foxit Reader Plugin for Mozilla 1.0.1.1117. That’s it, Jenny.
Finally, try going to any webpage with a PDF file on it, so you can check if it works perfectly. Tell me if it won’t.
