When I download a magnet link the bittorrent task box opens in Bitcomet however the actual file to be downloaded does not appear. Does anyone know how to fix this.

Magnet links depend on being picked up by a tracker which will then start a ‘normal’ .torrent action. If it’s not carried on a tracker, nothing will happen
