Most likely cause is that you don’t have the proper codecs installed.
There is a free program called “gspot” that will analyze the video to tell you what codec it uses, or you can install a good codec pack. I use K-lite codec pack (full). Just be careful about changing from any default options in setup, installing conflicting codecs can make your system unstable.

Yes, but MPCStar installs its own ffdshow instance, which is supposed to take care of decoding most video and audio types by default (just like vlc does).
So, you shouldn’t have to install other codes or filters, right?
No, ffdshow only decodes a relatively few types. She didn’t say what she was trying to view, but ffdshow won’t work for quicktime, real, ogg, and a lot of others. I’m not even sure it’ll work for wmv. None of this matters though, without knowing what she’s trying to watch, - kluelos
