Masseur pmed me this:

new version of bitcomet bug killing me?, Today, 05:01 AM

hello BitComet developers,

i am admin of NewTorrents.info and I recently experienced a serious flood of requests to my server, which are basically killing everything on the server. This started at Wed 30, which seems to be the date of release of new version of BitComet. All the requests are for URL www.newtorrents.info/rss.xml. Haven’t you implemented some function which would be connecting to this url?

Please reply ASAP.

Thanks

Martin, www.newtorrents.info

Yes, I got that one also.

As far as I know, which unfortunately isn’t very far, no version of BitComet has anything like an rss feed reader. I could easily be wrong about that, since we’re not being told about new features and have to find out about them (and try to support them) along with everyone else.

But I don’t see any evidence that BC is responsible for, or even could be responsible for, a lot of hits on his feed. Yet I’m not comfortable with disclaiming it without knowing that it’s really so.

I can see where somebody might think it’s a good idea to incorporate a feed reader into the torrent search portion. I don’t use that at all, personally. I’d much rather use Firefox and plugins, for torrents and for newsfeeds generally. But something like what he’s saying could be there, and I’m not sure we’d even know it.

Anybody have better info?

I too received his PM, and have emailed Aimee.

I replied this to him as well.

I also agree about being unhappy about not knowing how to support new features until after they are released.

Aimee is going to begin keeping us better informed regarding this. For example, the guide regarding the video capture feature being posted.

Bit Comet passport has everyone scratching our heads, but I did make an announcement regarding this, although it contains little more then a very complicated “I don’t know” hehe.

The facts regarding this feature are still up in the air

All I know at this time, is many different idea are still being considered.

Please feel free to use the admin/developers section if you have any issues you would like to bring to their attention.

BitComet does have a basic RSS function. I have no idea how to use it though. Personally I just use IE7 for RSS feeds.

Our developers tell me that this is in no way related to Bit Comet.

I sent a message to this member at his forum, and he seemed grateful for the reply.

Aimee and I both thing this is a “bot” that is gathering torrents for another web site.

To Martin (admin www.newtorrents.info)

Regarding your inquiry regarding the massive hits to your web site.

I have spoken to our developers and they assure me that Bit Comet isn't

responsible for this.

Our developers suggested this is likely a torrent search "bot" from

another torrent site which is using your torrents to post on another site.

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me.
