approximate DL/UL rates for DSL connections

Recommended Posts

i have an ADSL connection rated for 1.5Mbps downstream and 256Kbps upstream.

what should my maximum download and upload rates be set at for maximum efficiency?

edit: strange... i set my max upload from 24KB/s to 7KB and my dl speed shot up from about 10KB/s to about 130KB/s. wow.

Is that bit or bytes?

bits.

it's been working better than usual, but now it's leveled out at about 60KB/s downloading and 7KB/s uploading

which seems okay. the tiny upload limit has me wondering though

For maximum efficiency, set your DL to no limit and set UL to anywhere between 30KB/s and 55KB/s.

You set that high a limit for uploads as a matter of courtesy. You will, one day, come upon a stream where there are very few who have as much as or more than you of a particular file, but a whole lot of people who have less than you. Some of them will be connected by the system to you, even as you are connected to some others who have more than you, but you will be downloading at a slower rate than you are uploading of that particular file. This is understandable because you have more of that file than those to whom you will upload. Select "peers" in the left-hand panel on an active file you are downloading and watch the progress as some peers come and others go. Also look at how much of the file each has as expressed as a percentage. After a while you will get some understanding of what is happening.

Since this is a sharing community, share. Let your proggie work in the background, or even during the night.

Just turn off the monitor and let the 'puter work.

Your program will eventually come in. I have had a few which took two weeks before the last little bit came in. You might want to select "trackers" and "peers" in your left-hand panel, and see what is happening under those two headings. I'm talking from BitLord, but BitComet might look prety much like it.

Another thing you might want to keep in mind is that it is best to have about three to five torrents coming in at the same time. Your best option is to dedicate a big hard drive (160GB or bigger) to the torrents. Do not forget to change the destination drive in your program's preferences if you do that. And make sure every torrent you start after that goes to the correct destination drive and folder. It's easier to change things before; very difficult after.

bart.
