Chris046
Hi guys, I would like to ask for ur help with my download speeds. I have followed this tutorial: http://forums.bitcomet.com/index.php?showtopic=533 for setting up my bitcomet prefeneces. I have Apple Mac Wireless Airport router, thats connected to my Voyager 205 broadband router. I have opened up a port on my Voyager 205 router, however i used Shields Up to show that the port is still closed, and i do not know why. I believe to be something to do with my wireless, although i have configured it so that it only acts as a transmiter, so wont effect the connection. Perhaps the problem has something to do with any programs that are running, i have zone alarm free edition and i have allowed it to connect to the internet. I have also seen on here that someone has posted the worst routers, my Wireless Airport is on there without a reason :S. Any help would be great, many thanks Chris
bitdave
ZoneAlarm may be causing your problem it is known to not keep up with p2p traffic. Since you already have a hardware firewall you should completely remove ZA and just use the windows firewall for now. And if you need outbound control on your firewall then you can use either Kerio free, or Jetico free, or Comodo free, or the old Sygate free firewall. (look on google for these) The problem could also be that you didnt do the portforwarding right did you do the static ip step either in windows or on the router (doing it on the router is best for laptops) Also dont worry about checking online to see if your port is open, just run a torrent for a minute or two and then look in the Peers tab and see if your getting any "Remote" initiations. If they are all "Local" then your forwarding rule isnt correct(im assuming you've already removed ZA). Is it all torrents that are slow cause maybe its just the torrents your downloading. kluelos
This is not a happy setup. Multiple routers will create multiplied problems without knowing very well what you're doing. You will need to make sure that your listen port is being passed through both routers without interference. It can be tricky to do. Even when you think you've disabled the firewall, it has a way of still coming up. It's best to do this piecemeal -- get one of the routers out of there, make sure the other one is working. THen swap routers, and make sure the other one's working. At this point you can confirm that you know how to configure both of them. Then figure out how you're going to do the hookup with both routers in the system. That may be very tricky, so get it clear in your mind, or maybe on paper first. Don't worry about the "bad routers/modems" list. Unfortunately, hardware is being added to it on the basis of whether anyone ever had a problem that they blamed on the hardware, whether it was at fault or not, whether they knew what they were doing or not. Chris046
Thanks guys for getting back to me! Its odd on the initiations it says that like, 5 out of the 100 have "Remote" on the other have "Local". Is that me or the people im connecting too? I opened the port using the inbuild web page of the router, i put ip of my router in the address bar and connected to it like that. Heres the link to what i did: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers...05/BitComet.htm Yer i have tried using bitcomet with ZA shut down didnt make any effect that i could see, just stayed at the same speed even with out 60 seeders to 20 leechers, i was only going at 40-50kb and i could be goin at the top see of 120kb ish. My mate using bitcomet and has a modem at 1mb like me and he can download at his full speed. Yer ill def try using a different firewall, like the ones that you guys have suggested :) Ive been thinking about installing BitDefender 8 Pro and use the firewall on the that, what do you guys think? Yer ill try and move my routers around, only when the rest of my family are out because thats how they connect to the internet as well. Thanks again for all your help Chris
kluelos
If you've got remote initiations, you're golden. That's the whole point of this open port business, so that other clients in the swarm can contact yours and initiate connections. Without that your downloading will be vastly slower. Download speed is heavily dependent on the makeup of the swarm, which you can't control and which depends very much on the particular torrent at the particular time. Open Office has a torrent distribution that's always well-seeded, so you can use it as a test to see what your setup is capable of. If you're not getting very respectable speeds from it, you know something's still not right.

This is one of a few very bad habbits of this firewall.
