asterisk
Two days ago I tried to download some 'light reading' from a 'gentlemen's website' but none of the torrents would start. I'd open them in BitComet and their icons would turn into two blue arrows and nothing would happen. Next to Tracker Status it said "Connecting Tracker to say start, waiting for response" so I waited. Hours later, there'd been no progress so I deleted them. I'm currently in China on vacation so I figured that the website had been censored by the government, which isn't uncommon.. although it's usually for political websites.. Anyway, the next day I was feeling in the mood for some light reading again, so I visited the same site and tried to download something else and it worked perfectly, finishing with lightning speed. Today I felt like I could use some more light reading but I'm running into the same message as before: Connecting Tracker to say start, waiting for response. What's up with that? I've attempted 7 different files tonight, they've all given me the same message. Any insight?
The UnUsual Suspect
do the torrents that will not run have seeders and peers? From what you are reporting, I believe the problem is not with your client, but either a dead torrent, or an issue with the tracker. asterisk
The number of peers isn't a problem, they've got like 100 seeders and 300 leechers each. Public DHT is already enabled too by the way, whatever that means.
The UnUsual Suspect
DHT (distributed hash table) is a protocall that allows each peer to do the work of the tracker. If the tracker enables dht, you can then download the files if the tracker is offline. Concerning the problems you are having, Its my opinion that this issue is with the tracker, not your client. There may be nothing you can do to resolve this issue if the tracker is not online. It is possible you were able to download before using dht because you happened to be connected to peers who have enabled dht, but this is only one possibility. If your client works with other trackers without this connection error, then I would suggest you contact the web site that hosts these torrents to resolve this issue. asterisk
Hate to sound naive, but what in the world is a tracker in the first place?
The UnUsual Suspect
Hi, Here is a great link to get you started in understanding bit torrent protocall... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bittorrent To explain this fully in a forum post would not be possible, so suffice it to say a tracker is a web site that coordinates the peers so that the torrent can run. Your client will then connect to peers that have parts of the download that you need, and peers that need parts that you have. Suspect
Dark_Shroud
Over simplified a tracker keeps a peer list and keeps track of ratios & statistics.

Dark_Shroud
You might want to use a proxy for web browsing then. :(
The UnUsual Suspect
Heh, Wikipedia is one of the sites blocked by the government here, but I got the jist. Thanks. My advice, Stop paying taxes, Arm for war... Suspect ps. ok folks, only joking (no hate mail please) :D  :D  :D  I am shocked that a govenment would block Wikipedia, its strictly an encyclopedia designed to distribute information. However, perhaps you can do a search on "bit torrent protocall" in what ever search engines you are permitted to use (or use a proxy as my friend dark suggested)
asterisk
This isn't the first time they've blocked Wikipedia either. I don't know what the other times were for but this time it's because there were articles that supposedly supported Taiwanese independence. Block started in October of last year. I just discovered that every single wikipedia page is also on Answers.com, something the government hasn't discovered yet apparantley. Google Video doesn't work here either. It says that the feature isn't available in the country. Funny thing is, I was able to use it here one day and I feel somehow related to it not working anymore. I was looking for a video on YouTube but I couldn't get it to play on this laptop because Flash needed to be installed and I was too lazy to do that so I went onto Google Video and watched it. Next day I'm looking for something else and it tells me that it's not available. And you were right Suspect, the problem was with the trackers and not the client. I tried downloading from some other sites and it worked fine. Googled around about the website that was having problems and found out it was bought out by another company and the former admins left... but the articles I got that from had no dates so I have no idea when that happened. And I'm still wondering why the downloads worked on that one day though, after having the same problem on days before and after.. odd. Thanks for your help. The UnUsual Suspect
it is possible that you connected to peers that had dht enabled and were able to download on that one occaision. This is the only thing I can think of to explain it, unless the tracker was infact running that day. Suspect ps. glad to be of help
