Ignorant_bliss
hi there, i've been using bitcomet for about a year now and never really had too many issues, however, lately my downloads seem to be taking an awful long time, and my d/l speed rarely gets above 1-2kbps, previously it has been as high as 125kbps (i have a 1mb feed). for example. i have a download running now that has a 3483% health rating with seed/peer ratings of 25/49 [25/108], yet the download speed is never above 4kbps has something changed recently to slow the torrents down? could i be getting my bandwidth throttled by the ISP? quick note - i changed my router to a netgear DG834G recently, will this have made a difference? cheers
The UnUsual Suspect
If your listening port is not forwarded properly in your router, this exact problem will occur. Or, if you didn't set a static IP address in windows, then upon rebooting, your ip address could have changed so that your port is no longer forwarded properly. Portforward.com has guides for doing both of these proceedures. Suspect

Suspect thanks suspect. i followed the guide on portforward.com, and the speed still hovers around 3-4KB. i added the port and set a static IP. any more clues as to what is preventing the good speeds i used to get? is there a way i can check whether i configured my router correctly? cheers
kluelos
The purpose of all that is to get your listen port unblocked so other swarm members can initiate contact with you. If your firewall(s) block the listen port, they can't get through and your speed will suffer greatly. Check your listen port at www.canyouseeme.org with BitComet running, Any answer besides "yes" means "no, the port's blocked" and you'll need to figure out what's blocking it. It may be more than one thing.
Ignorant_bliss
hi kluelos, i just tried your suggestion and i get 'success, i can you your service on port 8408, your ISP is not blocking 8408' and when i check my windows firewall, the port is allowed also. I am running Norton Protection Center too, and i wonder whether that has an influence - can't seem to see any settings though, and if norton was blocking, then that URL you just sent me surely would not have worked?!?!? i still have 38 seeds and 68 peers, with a 2k download. hmmm, this is frustrating any ideas would be greatly appreciated :)
Ignorant_bliss
i'm still unable to get my d/l speed up past 5k, even with the port open. can anyone suggest a way to check if my settings are correct? my standard d/ls are working at 120k but bitcomet is dreadfully slow. any help would be greatly appreciated
kluelos
Is your connection capable of higher speeds? Try the Open Office torrent. It should download at very high speed. If it does not, then you are probably being throttled and need to require encyrption in your Advanced Preferences.
Ignorant_bliss
hi again Kluelos, thanks for your recommendation - i tried the torrent, and it downloads at 1k, compared to the old 120k rate i used to achieve. where is this setting in advanced preferences? in bitcomet? i have looked through all the settings but can;t see any mention of encryption. i'd love to get to the bottom of this, and get my old d/l rates back again. once again thanks for your help

I can't see a mention of encryption anywhere in my router settings, nor bitcomet preferences. hmph. hope you can help
tiffmc
I'm having the exact same problem! I used to get around 50 KB/s but now I am getting around 1 - 3 KB/s. My ports are forwarded correctly, I'm getting both remote and local initiations, I haven't changed anything.
Ignorant_bliss
i'm beginning to come to the conclusion that my ISP must be throttling my bandwidth, since i now have the same problem with another P2P application i use called 'soulseek', although it's not quite so slow, it still is not correct. it's strange because soulseek reports that it can see the open port, but i still have these terribly slow speeds. since no-one here seems to be able to offer any suggestions that have helped, i can only conclude that the ISP is to blame. I use TalkTalk and am in the Uk, i'd be interested if any other users have TalkTalk as their provider? thanks again

One added thing you should check is whether your Windows settings are optimal for a broadband connection. Check out the program DSL-Speed 3.6 at www.DSL-Speed.org When I ran it to optimize my settings it trippled my download rate! :o
Ignorant_bliss
having searched the web and reading through all these speed related threads, it seems that many of us are suffering from ISP throttling. I wonder if anyone knows a way around this problem? from what i can tell this problem is getting progressively worse, particularly in the UK. I've read a little about using alternative proxy servers as a possible resolution to the problem. does anyone have any experience of how to correctly configure this? at the very least I think it would be a good idea to create a list of ISP's that are known to throttle, to avoid people having to spend hours changing configurations in a hopeless attempt o get around this. TalkTalk - my ISP have admitted to me that they throttle bandwidth for P2P traffic. As a result i can no longer download live shows of artists that are torrented, even though they are copletely legal. I am considering taking this to the office of fair trading, since TalkTalk sell their package as an 'unlimited' service. it may be simpler though to change ISP's to a known P2P friendly service. any thoughts? The UnUsual Suspect
I agree, and hate when ISPs throttle BT traffic. Using protocall encryption was quickly developed to negate their efforts, and did a good job for quite a while. Recently, a new form of protocall encryption detection was introduced to defeat this. I don't have any first hand knowledge, but assume it was/is at least somewhat effective in slowing BT traffic. I'm sure its only a matter of time before a new encryption is developed that their detection can't detect. After all, Microshits WGA spyware was defeated within three days of release. I'm sure as soon as some of the great minds in the pirate comunity get ahold of this detection software, they will reverse engineer it and it too will be defeated.
