half9
When I make a torrent, how do I make it private? I just want ONLY the people from my tracker be able to download the torrent... like how http://www.demonoid.com/ does it, cant download the file untill you sign on. In bitcoment you can choose from 3 dif network types - Enable Public DHT Network Disable Public DHT Network (Use Tracker Server) Only accept Peers from tracker (No DHT or Peer Exchange) what do they do? Dark_Shroud
Only accept Peers from tracker (No DHT or Peer Exchange) This is the one you want to make the .torrent private. DHT is a secondary/back-up method of finding peers. PEX (Peer Exchange) is a method where clients exchange IP lists. Making a .torrent private means it will only use IP lists from the tracker. kluelos
This is correct as far as it goes. But no one needs to log in to (or even be a member of) Demonoid in order to download any of their torrents. For searching, yes. For getting the torrent from them, yes. But if you already got the torrent from, say, Mininova or IsoHunt, you don't need to be a member to download the contents. What you want is something quite different. This has nothing to do with the torrent. It has to do with your tracker software, which needs to refuse to communicate with anyone who is not registered with the web site. This usually means that the tracker url in the torrent must have a key value, a parameter that identifies the particular downloader. Of course, you then run into difficulties if a torrent gets shared with others when it shouldn't be. Or you can try identifying authorized downloaders by IP, but that means they can't download when they change locations. In any case though, that next step must be done with your tracker software, and not with the torrent.

Thank you for alll your help but what you said makes "Enable Public DHT Network Disable Public DHT Network (Use Tracker Server) Only accept Peers from tracker (No DHT or Peer Exchange)" Useless... whats the point of making a torrent private? The UnUsual Suspect
If you want to join a private tracker, try Torrent Matrix http://torrentmatrix.com/ Torrent Matrix is one of the worlds largest torrent trackers. There are many reasons you would want to have a private tracker. This keeps the Anti P2P groups from posting fake torrents. Members that post torrents with viruses, addware/spyware are banned. Leeches are banned. There are many valid reasons to use private trackers. Also, speeds are often better because most users will continue to seed, so their ratio is kept up, and more seeders means more speed. Demoniod is NOT a private tracker, it is a members only site, but the torrents and tracker are public. They do have a ratio tracker, to keep leeches out of the forum, but this doesn't make it "Private" Some people refer to demoniod as "semi private", but that is not accurate. Private trackers don't allow torrents that use DHT, as this would enable non registered users to download their torrents. I hope this answers your questions.
